Gorey
Youth Needs Group
is a community based youth project which aims to support young people
and their families, particularly those who are or who may be at
risk of social exclusion.
The
Project was established in April 1995 following a local consultation
process, which identified a lack of facilities and activities for
young people in the area. A committee was subsequently formed comprising
local people and representatives of voluntary and statutory groups.
Since
its establishment, Gorey Youth Needs Group has always engaged
a participative model of youth and community work. The emphasis
of this model has been on empowering and enabling those young people
who are most excluded from society to take an active role in defining
and controlling their own futures and to contribute positively to
the communities of which they are a part.
In
July 1999 Wexford Community Care approved core funding for a Community
Youth Project, with the following objectives:
Project
Objectives
- To
provide direct intervention for young people “in need” or who
can be identified as being “at risk” (e.g. out of home, out of
school, early pregnancy) to enable them to grow and develop to
their full potential.
- To
expand and develop a range of voluntary based community child
and youth groups for young people between the ages of 5 – 18 years,
particularly those experiencing real exclusion and disadvantage.
- To
provide complimentary youth work services to the community as
needs are identified and to further compliment the work of local
schools and health board staff.
- To
bring together in a new partnership, Wexford Community Care.,
G.Y.N.G., County Wexford Partnership and the local community to
provide professional preventative services to children and families.
-
To achieve S.E.H.B. aims with respect to its responsibilities
under the terms of the Childcare Act, 1991.
Gorey
Youth Needs Group is directed by a local Management Committee
comprised of representatives from Project Groups, members of the
local community, local voluntary and statutory agencies. There is
also a facility for co-opting relevant state, voluntary or social
partner organisations in order to promote a partnership approach
to our work.
